Founders & Management Team
Shankar AVSB, is the Founder and Investor/Trader for MarketStar. He has executive level experience in Technology and Energy sectors, including Project Finance and M&A, and has worked with industry leaders like ABB, Infosys, BP, Fidelity and Citigroup. He is a keen student of the global financial markets, and has a special interest in energy and natural resources. Shankar strongly believes that with patience and discipline, it is possible to get above-market returns over any time frame. He stays in touch with a wide range of entrepreneurs, investors and traders worldwide. Business owners worldwide have consulted with him, and his views have also featured in Harvard Business Review. He is an alumnus of NIT Jaipur, IIM Lucknow, and has also studied at Stanford University.
Sandeep Saxena, is the Founder & Managing Director of MarketStar and Big India Farms. He has in-depth understanding of financial services industry, along with Indian retail, agriculture, food supply chain, and real estate businesses. Sandeep strongly believes in creating scale and supply chain efficiency in every industry, and that the cost of financial services can be brought down significantly by reducing middlemen. Sandeep has expertise in business contracts, M&A and deal negotiation, and has advised multiple entities in their financial planning. He has worked with leading companies like Indian Oil, Infosys, Cogizant, Amex, Franklin Templeton in senior executive roles. He is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIM Lucknow.
Both Shankar and Sandeep have a keen interest in the Indian legal system, government, and public policy.
Business Advisors
Rahul Mehrotra, is a successful management consultant and entrepreneur. While at McKinsey & Company (Singapore) he worked with leading oil and gas companies, sovereign wealth funds and private equity clients. His enabled upstream value creation, business transformation, and analyzing potential oilfield services investment opportunities in Asia. Prior to McKinsey, Rahul held a variety of positions in operations, business development and corporate strategy with Transocean and Schlumberger. He holds the distinction of serving most large NOCs of India, SE Asia and Middle East. Rahul has a B-Tech in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kanpur and an MBA from INSEAD, France. He is a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
As traders, we value time and speed, and prefer to operate with low margins and high volumes. In fact, we find that stock trading is very similar to operating a retail business, in which we have experience through our group company 7to9 Retail. The same concepts of inventory turnover applies to stock trading as well. We have developed our own trading model, and our trading operations can scale up easily as per business requirements.
As investors, we take pride in the companies we invest in and we are long term shareholders. Our capital is used to buy their stocks during weak periods and we don’t sell in downturns. We make only a few investments, but when we do, we stick with our companies for the long haul, and this approach has paid off over the last 15 years of our investing experience. We have no preference for any particular industry but we invest only in large-cap or mid-cap companies with at least about Rs 2000 crore market capitalization, because we already have sufficient early stage/ small cap exposure through other group companies of 7Avenues, which is the holding company of MarketStar Capital.
